Social Media Can Be A Swamp

Social media—a “supposedly” necessary tool that authors must use to market their books. What a swamp it is.

I love searching for books to read, connecting with readers or writers, and swapping advice or pitfalls. However, this new influencer trend, where people recommend, or worse, do not recommend books, is upsetting.

A book might not be your cup of tea. But, good gracious, there are influencers who tear authors apart if they dislike a book. A book review should focus on the book itself, not the author.

Bullying is too common on social media. I believe we need to stand up against the hateful vitriol. I support freedom of speech and never want to censor anyone. However, I also believe that society shapes what behaviors are acceptable. Bullying is never okay.

I hope 2026 is a year when people are more compassionate toward others online. It takes the same amount of energy to be kind or ugly.  May you choose kindness and sleep on a softer pillow.

Pass with peace,

Mae
